Marbles

A friend of mine is moving away soon. I will miss him very much and deeply appreciate what we have shared as our paths have come together.

He and I work in a fast paced Distribution Center that often finds us going in many directions at once. And, like many, we have aspects of our personal lives that can throw us all kinds of sideways. He often jokes that he feels like he is losing his marbles. And I often reply that I will hold on to them for him. Our ability to share humor and genuine presence has provided an undercurrent of support to our lives and our occupation.

When I think of the term “losing my marbles”, I recall Peter Pan's dear friend, Tootles, who brilliantly offered his lost marbles to our experience in a way that has touched me deeply.

Sometimes we misplace them in distraction, or perhaps they have met with a sad relinquishing, or we’ve stashed them in a secretive hiding spot to keep them safe; and our ability to bring them home feels difficult. Perhaps we have much vying for our attention, and as we pull each marble from our bag and give it our focus, these precious hands of ours which try to hold the world can become over-full and we may find the growing collection of them tricky to contain. The bag may spill and our marbles take off in directions of their own.

The more marbles we “lose”, the more we may feel scattered and less than whole.

Of all the occupants in our marble bag, there is usually a favorite; the prized marble. That one, to me, is Heart and Soul. In my personal bag of marbles, you could call this one my “shooter”. This one is most precious and informs the rest. As we develop the ability to give our attention to it, the quality and handling of the other marbles shifts; and we are invited to be present with these others in a deeper way.

This most important of marbles can feel small and difficult to find in our bag, especially when we are feeling “off”. In the jumble of colors and patterns of the other marbles, we might struggle to hone in on it. But once we find it, we are home again. We remember. And the others begin to take their proper place in our bag and in our life.

As my friend's time to part is approaching, I felt it time to return his “marbles”. I found some beautiful ones and placed them into a colorful bag. These are to be what I present to him in our last meeting.

With a heart-felt note of appreciation for his life and for the blessings that I know are on their way to him, I blessed these precious marbles and asked that they serve him in the highest and best ways.

I pray that you always find your Heart and Soul. In all honesty, this is the one marble you cannot lose completely, no matter how absent if feels. It will make itself found over and over again. Sometimes someone else brings it back to us, and sometimes we discover it in the most surprising of places. Of course, this lovely sphere is only a representation of the Heart and Soul that reside deeply within each of us already. May you nurture it and invite its presence into your life as you explore the others. The value it adds is immeasurable.
